Transition

We believe that transition to high school should be an exciting time for children. At Wetherby High School, we work really hard to make the process smooth and enjoyable. Transition starts months before students join us in September.

Our team visit schools to meet with students and discuss with their primary teachers the strengths and areas of development for each individual child. We invite students and parents to various events to answer questions, address concerns and allow students to make new friends.

Our ‘Day in the Life of a High School Student’ events have proven to be very popular with both students and parents. They give children a chance to meet new friends, explore the school buildings, get involved in lessons and meet their new coaching groups.

If you have missed our open evening and would like more information, or to visit our school, please contact us by emailing [email protected] or calling (01937) 522500.

Year 8 – 11 Admissions

If you’re moving into Leeds or want to change schools in Leeds, you need to make a school transfer – often called an in-year application. Moving schools can be a difficult experience for a child. You should always speak to your child’s current school before trying to move to see what support they can offer you.

How to apply for an in-year place – You can apply for a place online using the Leeds in-year application form. You can apply for places at our school and most other Leeds schools at the same time on this form. If you have moved house, please upload evidence of the house move with the online application. You can find out what you need to provide on the above website.

We have to offer places by applying our admission policy criteria to your child’s application and we will contact you with our decision about offering you a place. We will tell you our decision no later than 15 school days from when you apply. If we cannot offer you a place, we will;

  • write to you to explain the reasons,
  • explain how you can appeal
  • add your child to our waiting list in case a place becomes free.

Our waiting lists are kept until end of each school year. You will need to make a new application if you want to be on the waiting list for the following school year.

For further information about the secondary phase admissions process, please visit www.leeds.gov.uk or contact our admissions officer, Mrs W Sagar, at [email protected] or 01937 522500.

Appeals

You can appeal against the decision to refuse your child a place at your preferred school(s). By doing this, you will automatically be placed on the waiting list for your higher preference school. In the meantime, you should accept the place you have been offered by contacting the school directly. This will ensure your child has a place in September and it will not affect your waiting list position or the appeal.

If you wish to appeal for a school in a different local authority, you should contact the relevant council for further details. Please visit www.leeds.gov.uk/schools-and-education/school-admissions/school-appeals for further information on appeals. If you are not offered a place at the school you requested, you will have the right of appeal.
